They rode the largest machine ever built. Its first stage generated the same power output as the whole of the electrical generation capacity of the United Kingdom. A total of 12 amazingly brave men have walked on another surface other than the earth.  They have looked back at the earth and with a thumb able to blockout the whole of the world’s image. I remember as a child rushing home from school to watch daily images broadcasted on television wishing that I was there.  I find it now incredible that within a few years there will be nobody alive who has walked on the moon.  There are only 6 Apollo lunar walking astronauts alive with their ages between 81 to 86.  Its hard to say when anybody else will take the expensive leap into the void.

Supermoon and Apollo Moon Missions

On the right is a shot I took of the Supermoon in November 2016.  This is when the moon is closest in its orbit to the earth at around 356,500km from the earth.  This started me thinking about the amazing journey man made to the moon.  December 1968 Apollo 8 crew were the first humans to orbit around another body. Apollo 11 in July 1969 the first two men to walk on the moon.  Three and half years later the last visitors of Apollo 17 left the lunar surface on their return back to the earth. Next to my shot of the moon are the Apollo landing sites.
